It is the afternoon of Tuesday, October 8, 2019, as I write this. However, it will be dated October 9th.
Tomorrow is Yom Kippur — a day of atonement. A day to balance the scale for thoughts and actions that did not reveal your best self: a day of introspection and reflection. A time to envision a better you without distraction.
It’s always been a day to focus on relationships. The relationship I share with those I love, with those around me as well as my relationship with the Force that orders the Universe. It’s been about At-One-Ment. Integration. Oneness. Being centered. Being at peace. Just as it has always been about service, kindness, compassion, and empathy. This year, especially.
The realization that I might not be here is not lost on me. No one understands better than I the gift I have been given. Nor, does anyone else recognize the responsibilities that gift brings with it more clearly, even if those responsibilities are self-imposed
You don’t have to be Jewish to understand the significance of a holy day like this. The concept is central to almost all religious beliefs. Just like you don’t have to reserve scrutiny for your thoughts or actions to just one day a year. You can explore your responsibilities to yourself and others every day and probably should.
That’s what I will be doing tomorrow. It’s probably what we should all be doing tomorrow and every day that follows.
