At the Expense of Something More…

I just completed the first portion of the third prompt of a program I just started. It included a reading assignment—I know how odd that must sound—watching three Ted talks, and listening to an audio recording.

This came at the end of a very busy day. A day that started with correcting problems I had last night posting the video and blog from yesterday. A video that had to wait until I was able to overcome the technical challenges associated with doing stuff like this. That was followed by a conference call. Which was in turn, followed by a tech rehearsal for a webinar I’ll be doing later this evening.

There was more. But in all honesty, I really can’t remember everything that occurred. There was just too much to keep track of.

What each task had in common with every other task was that everything I was involved with occurred at the expense of something else. Something more. Which, of course, leads us to a discussion of choices and priorities. A discussion of want to’s and have to’s.

I would have preferred to spend at least a third of the day parked on the couch watching the end of the old guard or something equally as frivolous. But that was not an option. Not if getting things done is important to you.

If getting things done is important to you, you’re forced to decide what is important versus what is essential. You have to decide what has to be done in order to move you closer to your goals and objectives. Closer to your vision. Versus what is likely to move you further away. Anything you do requires conscious thought. It involves thoughtful consideration of what’s important and what’s not. The choices are inescapable.
