I just wrapped up my interview with Tom Dorsey and AutoVitals Digital ShopTalk Radio…

Despite the technical challenges that eventually that placed Tom in a hallway at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, it was another really positive interview experience. And, while most of what we talked about might seem specific to the automotive aftermarket if you listen carefully that really wasn’t the case. In fact, much of what we discussed translates across all industries and experiences.
One example is the benefit of attending industry-related shows or events like Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week in Las Vegas. Beyond all the technical and management-related educational opportunities available, there are countless opportunities to connect and network with other professionals. The critical takeaway is the importance of connection and communication isn’t reserved to or for automotive aftermarket events. The need to connect and communicate is universal and the benefits are every bit as crucial to success in life as they are to achieving success in business.
All it takes is curiosity and a willingness to confront the fear of appearing foolish. You start by admitting that you don’t know what you don’t know. Those things you can’t possibly know because you haven’t yet been exposed to them!
The notion of community can’t be overemphasized. Community played a critical role in my treatment and recovery. It is no less important when it comes to success in business.
The key is recognizing that moving forward is simply a matter of self-selection. Your willingness to raise your hand to say, “I’m here! I’m ready to listen. Ready to learn! I’m anxious to share, participate, and to grow”
The bottom line is that showing up is really more than half the battle on your way to self-actualization and that’s what today’s interview was all about.
