Plan B and the Tyranny of an Unknown Future

I drove to Duarte and back for blood work earlier this afternoon. Two hours behind the wheel for a couple of minutes spent having my blood drawn.

You could look at it as unnecessary. As a total waste of time. But, I don’t. I look at it as “windshield time,” the time I get to really think about things. It’s some of the most productive time I get to spend and this trip was no different.

This time I found myself thinking about how the world has literally been turned upside down. How quickly and violently things have changed. About how and when we might find our way back to some kind of normal and what that some kind of normal might look like.

I’m willing to bet every one of you has a plan for when that finally happens. Just like I’m willing to bet you have a vision for what that future will look like. The question I have for all of us — myself included — is what will that plan look like if the future we imagine is unrecognizable. Unimaginable?

Do you have a Plan B? Are you ready for a new normal? A different current reality? Are you willing to be the tail end of that dog or will you face the demons and create your own destiny? Have you thought about a new and different recovery as a potential opportunity? A chance to reinvent yourself? Your business?

I’ll bet there are plenty of things you would change if only you could…

What are they and why don’t you? Can you think of a better time — a better opportunity? What are you waiting for?

The tyranny of an unknown future is repressive. The vision of a better tomorrow somehow irresistible!
