Where Your Eyes Go…

You wouldn’t think a random conversation, a movie, or the advice your father gave you when you were sixteen would serve as the foundation for a blog, but it has.

The conversation centered on the importance of attitude and focus. Especially, within the context of COVID-19 and its reality. Attitude is determined by focus. Limit your focus to “good stuff” and your attitude will follow. Concentrate on “bad stuff” and it will be difficult, almost impossible, to maintain a positive attitude.

If all you think about is how rotten someone is, you will find more and more reasons to confirm your bias and vice versa.

That led to The Art of Racing in the Rain, the movie Lesley and I watched this past weekend. Which led us to something my father drilled into me from the first time I got behind the wheel. “Mitchell, the vehicle will go wherever your eyes go. Wherever you focus your vision.”

Stare at the wall and there is no doubt you will become intimate with the wall! Focus on where you want to be coming out of a tight corner—and, regardless of your speed heading into the turn—you have a shot.

Life and the COVID-19 pandemic are no exception. You can get through anything if you focus on the positive. If you are consumed by all the negative aspects of the virus, however, you may never be able to pull yourself out of the funk!

There is one other thing. Focus alone may not be enough. Change requires action and action requires effort.

So, the question is where are you focusing your attention? And, if it isn’t in the right place what actions are you willing to take to change your focus?
